Beginning March 1:
A Flower Blooms by BARBARA LALICKI
Barbara Lalicki is an enthusiastic gardener and many of her paintings are based on flowers she’s grown, coupled favorite vases and ceramic figures. The show's title, A Flower Blooms, is taken from the Oscar Wilde quote, "A flower blooms for its own joy." Subsequent research has shown that flowers bloom for many reasons, including to attract pollinators. Michael Pollan proposes, in The Botany of Desire, that plants flower, in part to inspire humans to grow them and perpetuate the species. Lalicki says, "I value the science for revealing the wonders of nature's complexity, but when I look at a flower, I do think it enjoys the sunshine."
Barbara also does pet portraits and people derived from black-and-white images, such as small family photos, that she reimagines in color. Formerly an editorial director at HarperCollins, Barbara teaches “Creating the Picture Book” at Pratt/Manhattan and “Picture Book Essentials” at the Scarsdale Adult School with author-illustrator Steve Henry.
Featured in MM&S, an Internet and print magazine devoted to monoprints, she’s studied with a variety of teachers including, importantly, Bruce Waldman. The range of Barbara’s artwork can be seen at www.barbaralalicki.com
