Caring for Our Local Community
At FUSW, we recognize the need for both charity and justice. Most of the work we do at First Unitarian is charity. Charity is designed to meet immediate needs like feeding the hungry. But, we also ask questions about why people don't have enough food which lead us to justice work.

Midnight Run
We regularly prepare and deliver meals, clothing, and human connection to homeless men and women in Manhattan. Donations of food, clothing, toiletries, and time (from adult and youth volunteers) are greatly needed.

Share the Plate
Once a month, FUSW supports local charities by sharing donations from the collection plate, as well as educating our congregation about each charity that we sponsor. We highlight one organization or justice initiative each month. Members are invited to submit nominations to the Board. The organization must be one that the member supports with their passion, time, and talent, as well as dollars. It must have an impact locally, even if it is a national organization, and it must be a registered 501(c)(3). We see this as a way to encourage others to join us in something we think is worthwhile, a way to support each other’s interests, and a way to increase our visibility in the wider community. We anticipate having the member or a representative from the organization speak briefly during a service in the month when that organization is highlighted.
